We are a 25 – 30 person choral ensemble whose members hail from a broad variety of professions and occupations. Our backgrounds are as diverse as our music, but we are unified in our commitment to each other and to the highest level of choral performance. We work hard to prepare our music, but we always have fun along the way.
Dedicated to singing all genres of a cappella and accompanied music, we shift easily between the works of the "greats" and lesser-known composers. Our repertoire ranges from Mozart, Charpentier, and Handel, to jazz artists such as Louis Prima, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Irving Berlin. Audience favorites include works by pop artists like the Beatles, Sting, Paul Simon, and Cold Play, as well as important works by contemporary composers such as Eric Whitacre and Morten Lauridsen. In 2010 we were invited to give a special performance with pop artist Imogen Heap at the Orpheum Theater in Boston, to sing a choral arrangement of her song, Earth.
The chorus is ably directed by Dr. Therese Provenzano, an accomplished pianist, conductor, and choral festival adjudicator, who brings vitality to the music and makes it her own without distracting from the composer’s intent. Although much of our repertoire is performed a cappella, pianist and Opera del West founder Eve Budnick serves as our accompanist at rehearsals and in concert performances.
In Choro Novo has the pleasure of singing in wonderful venues that are both formal and informal. Our two main concerts in December and May are presented in the beautiful and acoustically live Marsh Chapel at Boston University. Prior to these performances, we bring our music to audiences at several major assisted living facilities in the western suburbs, where we enjoy visiting with the residents as much as they enjoy our singing. Once a year, at the invitation of the Dean of Marsh Chapel, we participate in worship services that are broadcast live on WBUR radio and on the internet. And, at the invitation of the Boston Red Sox, In Choro Novo is one of the groups that provides music for Christmas at Fenway and sings the national anthem annually at a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. Recently we had the honor of singing the anthem with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops Brass Ensemble at Fenway. We also perform the national anthem for the Boston Celtics yearly in December.
